FAQs

Where does the tour start? The tour starts at the downtown side (Hunter Museum side, NOT Coolidge Park side) of the Walnut Street Bridge. Take the Fourth Street exit off of I-27 to the 4th light and turn left onto Walnut, which deadends into the bridge where we start.

Where does it end? The regular tour ends at the Read House. Chattanooga has a free electric shuttle that runs basically up and down Broad Street, which you can catch back to the Bijou Theatre after the tour, then walk from there back to your car.

Do you have a circular tour? YES! Beginning July 17, we will be offering a circular tour through the Bluff View Art District on some weekends, in addition to the regular tour. This tour will start and end at the Walnut Street Bridge, and will be a little shorter (around 1 to 1 1/2 hours, give or take), and in atmosphere it more closely resembles Savannah or Charleston. This will be a good tour for folks who have already been walking all day, folks with young children or elderly people who do not want to walk up the hill from the Bijou Theatre to the Walnut Street Bridge after (or before, if you park near the Aquarium or the Read House) the tour. This tour, however, will not include Underground Chattanooga, Mountain City Club, the Read House, or a few more of the downtown stops.

Where should we park? There is free parking available on Walnut Street in the Provident lot, and in the lot on the left corner of Walnut and Second, as well as some parking on the street. If you use the lot at Walnut and Second, note that it is a one way drive, and you should head toward the left, rather than straight, when you enter the lot. There is also a paid lot right before the bridge. In the alternative, if you are taking the regular tour, you can park near the Aquarium and walk up the sidewalk hill which begins across Market Street from the Ocean Journey Aquarium building, and ends 2 blocks later, where we begin our tour. Or, for the regular tour, you can park near the Read House and catch the free electric shuttle to the Bijou, and walk from there to the bridge. That way, you will have your car at the end. However, parking near the Read House is difficult on Fridays in summer when there are free Nightfall concerts going on in Miller Park, near the end of the tour.

What time zone are you in? Eastern time. If you are from anyplace other than the Eastern time zone, the time will be 1-3 hours later here than your home, ie, turn your watches ahead, not back, and show up 1-3 hours before your home time.

When are tours? Tours are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:15 pm ET spring and summer, 7:30 pm fall. We also do specially set tours on other days for groups of 4 or more by advance reservation. If we have a specially set tour, it is not limited just to the group who first requested it; everyone is welcome. We have been averaging 2 specially set weekday tours per week in the summer. In addition, at some particularly popular times, such as near Halloween, we will schedule additional regular tours.

Is this a walking or riding tour? This is a walking tour. There are several stops along the way for stories about different haunted places downtown, so you will certainly not be walking the entire time.

Does the tour go into Underground Chattanooga? Yes! The regular tour does; the circular tour does not.

What is the length of the tour? Our regular tour take 1 1/2 -2 hours, depending on the guide, and the route is approximately 8/10 of a mile. The circular tour takes 1- 1 1/2 hours, depending on the guide, and is probably less than ? mile.

Is the tour suitable for children? Most children absolutely love our tours; however, we have had a couple of 4 or 5 year olds that got upset hearing about a woman getting her head ?bashed in?. Most children (except those who watch only PBS) hear more graphic things on television; however, use your discretion. If your child gets overly upset hearing about people being killed, a ghost tour is probably not the best choice for their entertainment.

Are there bathroom stops? No, so you might want to go before you come. There is a public restroom on the far side of the TN Aquarium, as well as a restroom open only to customers at The Ice Cream Show, in the plaza at the edge of the bridge where we begin. There is also a restroom open to customers of Rembrandt?s, a coffeeshop in the Bluff View Art District with the best bakery in town.

What is the cost? Tours are $13.00 for adults, $8.00 for children under 12. We also offer group rates for groups of 8 or more, and party packages. Interestingly, our tour has been very popular for bachelorette parties!

Are cameras allowed? Yes, we encourage everyone to bring cameras, as we have had a lot of people get ghost pictures on our tour (as you can see from the website). Audio recording of the tour, however, is not allowed.

How early should we arrive? We generally arrive 15 minutes prior to the tour, so anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes early.

Is tipping allowed? YES! Our guides greatly appreciate any and all tips.

What if it rains? We do our tours rain or shine, as long as we have guests that want to go. Some people even say they find the tour creepier during a storm.

Is there any way to hear more ghost stories about Chattanooga? Yes. We sell two driving ghost tour CDs, with directions to the sites, along with the stories. While these are all based on reported ghosts, these have been embellished, as there is not as much detail known on these ghosts as those on the tour. Also, there are a few very good books we would recommend: Chattanooga Chills, by Mark Fults, and Ghosts of the Southeast TN Valley, by Georgiana Kotarski.

What is your address? The address to put in a GPS to find our starting point is 100 Walnut Street, Chattanooga, TN 37402. However, our mailing address is 3144 Waterfront Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37419.

Are there any haunted places to stay in Chattanooga? Yes, see our "more fun in Chattanooga" page.
